Can I Take A Cooking Class if I Have Food Allergies?

At The Cook’s Studio, we aim to accommodate anyone who loves to eat! We are willing and equipped to cater to guests’ food allergies as well as dietary and religious restrictions where reasonable adjustments are applicable.

If you have a food allergy, dietary restriction, or concern, we ask that you notify us during your time of booking on our website. When our guests let us know ahead of their class date/arrival, we can make sure to have the necessary ingredients in house to ensure each guest has a safe experience and a successful, delicious dish.

Our Chefs take the safety of our guests extremely seriously. Upon notice of an attendee with food allergies or dietary restrictions our Chefs:

  • Reserve designated workstation (s) for the guest(s) with an allergy/restriction to ensure that the allergen/restricted ingredient never comes into contact with the work surface
  • Prepare all ingredients for the guest omitting the allergen/restriction before the allergen/restriction is present in the chef’s prep area, ensuring there will be no cross-contamination
  • Follow all ServSafe recommendations as well as Nassau/Suffolk County health code requirements

To follow are some of the frequently asked questions we receive from guests regarding food allergies and dietary restrictions:

I’m gluten free, can I attend [any] class?

No gluten? No problem! Our Executive Chef has tirelessly tested all of The Cook’s Studio’s recipes with gluten free substitutions where applicable to not only ensure a successful finished product but a delicious one, too. And when we say EVERY recipe, that even includes handmade gluten free pasta! Additionally, The Cook’s Studio has designated sets of tools and equipment for gluten free attendees who have celiac disease.

I’m a vegetarian/vegan/pescetarian.

No problemo! For vegans/vegetarians, we always keep vegetable broth on hand to replace animal-based broths/stocks. For protein substitutions, we will reach out to guests for a preference between tofu and Impossible “meat.” But we find that, more often than not, our vegetarian and vegan guests prefer their veggies straight up! For pescetarians, seafood will be substituted where applicable.

I keep Kosher/Halal. Can I attend a class?

Unfortunately, we are unable to offer a strict Kosher environment, but we can omit or separate restricted ingredients where possible. For a fully Kosher experience, feel free to email us and we can make a recommendation for a recreational cooking school on Long Island that does offer Kosher classes.

However, with advanced notice, we are happy to order in MCG/ISA certified Halal meats from our preferred local food purveyor.

I don’t eat pork. Can you accommodate that?

Depending on the recipe, guests who do not eat pork for any reason will either prepare a vegetarian dish, or if we are provided with advance notice, a substitute protein may be provided.

I’m dairy/egg/nut/sesame free. Can I still attend?

While we can certainly provide any guest a dairy/egg/nut/sesame free recipe, those ingredients will be present in the room/building. We ask that the individuals consider the severity of their own allergy before attending.

I’m allergic to seafood.

The majority of cooking classes at The Cook’s Studio don’t involve seafood, however, a handful do. If you have a seafood allergy, it’s helpful to our chefs to know if it is a shellfish or fin fish allergy or both. But either way, if it’s from the sea and causes you a reaction, then our chefs will make sure your ingredients and equipment never come into contact with anything that swims for a living.

I’m allergic to soy.

At The Cook’s Studio, we don’t use any ingredients containing soy and our cooking oil is an olive oil/canola oil blend.

I have a weird food allergy you’ve probably never heard of.

Lay it on us! You’d be surprised, your “really weird” food allergy might not be as uncommon as you think! Our professional Chefs have “heard it all” throughout their careers, and whether you’re allergic to mushrooms, onions, garlic, tomatoes, bamboo, confectioner’s sugar, protein, you-name-it, we will treat your food allergy just as seriously as the most common food allergies around. Just let us know at the time of booking, and we’ll be ready for you!

You’re in safe hands at The Cook’s Studio.
